Found My Bicycle

Bad Boy was found today. Bad Boy is my bicycle. And, NO, I did not name it Bad Boy. Cannondale did.

I had apparently parked the bike in a no-parking zone for bicycles. They had dropped by in the morning and put a sticker on the bike asking the owner (me) to remove it. Then made another sweep in the afternoon and removed all bikes with a sticker on them. So the lesson learned here is that I have to use the lunch time to remove stickers if I ever park in that area again.

The pickup place for the bike was a 15 minutes walk from the office, see the map below. The guys working there, all men in the later half of their life, were very friendly and helpful. They also apologized for having to cut my lock. Well, if they were so sorry for that they should have thought about it before cutting it 😉 Just kidding, they just manage the returning of the bicycles, not the retrieval.

If you wonder where you can park a bicycle in Minato-ku, have a look the following maps. The middle left map is for the area around Shinagawa station. Blue street means no-parking zone. I parked my bike in the left-most blue street about midway down (or up, I guess).

Lost My Bicycle

I forgot my key card to the automagical bicycle parking today so I parked by bicycle a block from the Shinagawa station, in front of the Intra City, and locked it to a fence. To my surprise, when I returned in the evening, it was nowhere to be found. I must have looked quite stupid walking back and forth trying to remember where I parked my bike.

Hopefully it was moved since it seems I parked in a no-bicycle-parking parking area – that explains the sign full of kanji that it was parked in front of 😉 Anyway, stay tuned for the thrilling conclusion… Tomorrow.

Taking the Bad Boy for a Ride

As usual I rode my bike (the Bad Boy) to the office. And as usual I parked at its hiding place.

After office I did not take the bike home as I usually do. Instead I went to the chiropractor in Kamiyacho. On bike. You can follow my ride from home (1.) to the office (2.) in red. Then from the office under a tunnel (3.) that was so low I could not stand up straight to the chiropractor (4.) in green. And back home again in blue.

Each part took about 30 minutes.

Summarizing First Week on a Bike

First week riding my new bike to the office can be summarized in… Wind in my hair, smile on my face, and a sore butt 😉

Getting a Hiding Place for my New Bike

While Chie went to the mansion’s board meeting I took my new bike for a ride, singing the Queen’s song “I want to ride my bicycle…” all the way (or maybe not).

I took the same way I have been thinking about using to go to the office and I got there in about 25 minutes, without really breaking a sweat. At Shinagawa I went to the bicycle parking and applied for a membership, after they have carefully checked that the bike fit the dimensions and followed all the regulations.

This may seem strange for a non-Japanese but check out the video below and you may understand why. You really don’t want your bike to get stuck in the parking machine 😉

But the service people there had no objections to my bike so I got a membership. And my bike got an IC tag. And I tried the parking machine out, supervised by the service men. It all went great. My bike parked nice and easily. And when I swept my IC card it came back to me just like a good boy though, if you remember, it really is a Bad Boy 😀
