Going to Honolulu

Left work at 3 pm. Went straight back home, picked up our bags and took a taxi to Shinagawa station where I met Chie. At 5:20 pm we were on a NEX train to Narita. Our flight for Honolulu left at 9 pm.

Plotting of our route to Honolulu

At 9 am we arrived in a sunny Honolulu. We spent most of the day shopping and relaxing. In the evening we had dinner at Takonoki, a Japanese restaurant that we “frequent” or at least we visit every time we are in Honolulu (except last September when Robert joined us because then we had dinner at Duke’s).

Peninsula

We spent a long weekend at the Peninsula this weekend. We checked in early on Friday, got our things in order in the Room 1703, and enjoyed the view for a while.

Emperor's palace from Peninsula

After a while the view got boring 😉 so we went downstairs to have afternoon tea. I believe we had 3, or maybe 4, cups of tea each. And a bunch of sandwiches, scones with marmalade, and cakes. Needless to say, we were quite full once we finished around 4:3 pm. Luckily the elevator was close by so we at least got back to our rooms for a rest.

Afternoon tea

Every day during our stay we went to the gym. Some running. Some weight lifting. And a lot of rainforest and cool mint showers, along with quite some time in the steam sauna. Relaxing 🙂

Saturday was shopping day. Actually, we did not shop so much but at least I found a pair of pants and a down west before we had dinner at Manten Sushi. It was an interesting restaurant with a fixed menu. And the sushi was tasty.

Sunday was the last day. We enjoyed it as much as we could, and checked out just before our “late checkout” deadline at around 3 pm. Then it was Sayonara Peninsula… AT least until next year 🙂

Returning Home

Woke up early to go to the airport. The sad day when vacation is over has finally arrived 🙁

We all travelled together to Honolulu were Robert spent his transition waiting time in downtown Honolulu while Chie and I spent most of it in the Delta lounge watching Football on TV and monitoring the Pittsburgh @ Oakland game on the Internet. Looked like a loss again (but once we were back home we found out it was a sensational come-back win :-D).

Surfing in Kiahuna

We went back to Kiahuna today, our last day in Kauai. Yesterday we had arranged for Robert to take a surfing lesson in the afternoon. The morning we spent as usual by playing in the water (waves were big today too), reading, sleeping and eating.

At 2 pm Robert joined the surfing lesson. First they spent some time on the beach learning how to get up on the board. After a while they were ready for the ocean. Robert did well and managed to ride the board on his first attempt, maybe not the most beautiful pose but… 😉

While Robert was surfing Chie and I continued to relax and to play in the water. Note the dog surfing behind Chie, I wonder if the dog has been to a surf school?

Once Robert was finished with his surf lesson we all went to the Lava’s bar next to the beach to celebrate Robert’s kickoff as a surfer. But Robert was too tired to stay so he returned to the beach, ate all my protein bars, and slept until Chie and I were back from our celebration.

At around 5:30 pm we decided it was time to return home. We stopped by a gas station to fill up the car and then a short stop at the Poipu Shopping Village for some final purchases before we returned home. Again we were just in time for a stunning sunset.

Kiahuna Beach

We decided to take another relaxing day at the beach, more specifically at the Kiahuna beach. The waves were quite big due to a swell from the south. It just made it more fun to play in the water 🙂

Between playing in the water and sleeping we also had time for some reading – just a little bit 😉

We returned home via a stop at the grocery store in Koloa at around 5:30 pm. And we got home just in time to watch (from our balcony) the sun set over Poipu.
