Written Test

In August my one-by-one year contract for up to five years will come to an end. It means Sony Mobile has to decide if they want to keep me for good or throw me out. Currently it seems they want to keep me so my manager and HR has initiated a hiring procedure.

First activity in the hiring procedure was done today, a written test under time pressure. First part was a logic thinking and math test that had to be done in 60 minutes. Questions like “in a bowl there are 5% apples, 35% bananas. The remaining fruits in the bowl are oranges and kiwis. There are 2 oranges for every 1 kiwi. There are 3 apples in the bowl. How many percent oranges are there in the bowl?”

The second part of the test was behaviour and characteristics test. About 200 statements that you should indicate how well they describe you, like “when I face a problem I take action directly without thinking.”

You can wonder why it is necessary when I already did the same type of test when I got hired 4.5 years ago. Also, it seems a poor substitute for evaluating what value I have added to the company over the past years – “it looks like you have done a good job but it cannot be true because you scored so low on the written test.” I actually had a crazy idea to test this by just answering everything the wrong way 😈

Yasaka

Last day for Calle to visit our Tokyo office. The week has been one long workshop to plan for 2013 fiscal year. Hard work but we have come up with some good ideas and we now have a rough plan that we will refine until April.

Lately both Chie and I have had so much to do both at the office and at home so we have not had time to buy groceries and cook. Today we also left office late so, again, there was no time to have dinner at home. Instead we went to Yasaka again.

We had a quick dinner and then I went home, exhausted. Chie stayed a while longer to talk with some of our Yasaka friends. There is a big difference in the level of relaxation a talk with friends will have on you when you are native or just intermediate in the language. I was just too exhausted to enjoy the conversation, and if I had stayed it would have either went in to my own little “glass bubble” not talking to anyone or been, just like Playstation 4, dead-on-arrival when I got back home.

SONY Osaki and Yasaka

Had a meeting at SONY Osaki in the morning so I went there directly, and met Calle and Sawaya-san outside the station. The meting went well and while the other took the Yamanote line to the office, with a billion other people, I had a pleasant ride on my bike 🙂

In the evening I met Chie at Yasaka for dinner. We met a few friends there, as always. We stayed longer than we had planned to do because we got caught in the talk with our friends. I was kind of exhausted after all meetings in the day so I left 30 minutes earlier than Chie to get home and prepare for sleep.

Critical Thinking – Day 4

After work today I went to the fourth Critical Thinking class at GLOBIS. As usual I was riding my bike, and as usual I was passing by Tokyo Tower. Besides the view of Tokyo Tower, I also had an interesting class where we handed in a report and covered how to do analysis.

Tokyo Tower

Once the class finished at 10 pm everyone went for nomikai (drinking party). I joined for a glass of bubbly water before I rode my bike back home.

Niseko – Day 3

Yet another fabulous snowboarding day. It had snowed the whole night so another 35 cm or so had been added to yesterday’s snow. I was in one of the first lifts up and got out in the backcountry immediately. Whohoooo!!!

Snowboarding down from G8

I had a few of my best rides ever. It is difficult to describe the feeling of floating on snow in the woods. The only sound you hear is the wind, the swoosh of the board on the snow, and the occasional bird that probably are telling their friends about the crazy creature disturbing their peace.

What else can you do but smile?
