Shinobu-san in Tokyo

A friend from Kobuchihama have come to Tokyo to help out one of here friends here. Ishihara-san arranged with a dinner for her volunteer group at KotoKoto to “celebrate” that Shinobu-san was in Tokyo.

It was fun to meet Shinobu-san and great to see here smile and laugh after the tough year they had since the 3/11 earthquake. I know Shinobu-san’s top-most want-to-travel-to country right now is Sweden so I had bought some Swedish things for her on my business trip last week. She seemed to appreciate it 🙂

Godzilla meets Club Leo

Met with Club Leo to watch “We Bought a Zoo“. Yeah, it might not sound so exciting but was actually a very nice movie, and great if you have kids in ages 8-13.

Afterwards we got into a battle with Godzilla on our way to dinner.

In Ebisu we had dinner at Mai Thai… Yes, a Thai restaurant with decent prices and good food.

Business Trip to Sweden

This week I spent flying between Sweden and Japan. I also had time to some meetings at our Lund office, but it felt like a mostly traveled between time zones.

But I had time to meet some friends in the evenings for dinner. Josef and his family on Wednesday night, finished with a walk along the sea back to the hotel. Calle and his family on Thursday night, finished with a drive by Slatan’s house in Malmö.

Flea Market

This weekend Ishihara-san arranged a flea market for Kobuchihama and Fukukiura. We were not able to help set it up on Friday night as we were busy working, but today we helped packing all the remaining items. Saturday was a record day for us as the flea market brought in 550,000 JPY (currently around 47,000 SEK) 🙂

We also met the Ishihara-san and the other on Saturday night. By “accident” when we had dinner at KotoKoto. We had just finished when they arrived, bunt we stayed for a while longer talking and got acquainted with one of their new friends – red iPhone cover 🙂

NW88

Through a vendor to Sony Mobile I got in contact with Yagi-san who I put in contact with Eurostep as Yagi-san’s business is to help IT companies establish in Japan. Yagi-san is also one of the hosts for an event called Networking88, which was established in 1988 – double eight also means double luck in Japan.

Yagi-san invited me to this year’s spring Networking88 and it was a very interesting event. I met so many kind people, mainly Japanese. The event was scheduled 6 pm to 8:30 pm, but I looked at my watch once… And it was already 9 pm and the event was closing down. I had have no time to even eat. Just talking with all the nice people I met.

One was an ex-engineer at Sony and part of the small team that worked on the initial CD from Sony. He also went to US to study at MIT and did research for the US defense in areas of information theory and communication. He told me that the theoretical limit for a photon to carry data is 3 bits, but practically they only managed 1.5 bit. The research he did was about communicating between earth and space using light.

Another one I met was one of the engineers working on the first computer for NEC, or something he called open hardware platform. He only spoke Japanese so I think the idea with the open hardware platform was similar to Open Source.

Once the event was over I stepped out and went for my bike, but just as I stepped out of the building a guy from the NW88 that I did not have time to talk with approached me and wanted to share business cards. We talked for a while and then I got on my bike and rode home from Yurakucho to Naka-Meguro.
