Last Day in Kauai

Last day in Kauai for this time. We went to our favorite beach, Kiahuna, to play in the waves. Today it was quite big waves and Chie brought the boggy board. I just use my body to surf the waves 🙂

We spent the whole day at Kiahuna beach. Readin. Playing and swimming in the water. Relaxing. But not wishing we could stay longer because that is not the Hawaiian way.

The Hawaiian way is to care about the moment only and not about the future. So we enjoyed the moment, and tomorrow when we have to leave Kauai we start wishing we could stay a little longer.

In the evening we went home to take a quick shower and then we returned to Kiahuna. Where we had dinner at the Point. We had a dinner mainly so we could have nice drinks and not so much for the food that is usually better when we make it ourselves than eating out in US. Chie had a Mai Tai and I had a virgin Lava Flow.

After dinner we filled the tank in the car, $40 made it topped up. Then we tried some alternative routes back from Koloa town to Poipu but without luck so we went the usual way. Once back home it was packing to get ready for our early rise and drive to the airport tomorrow morning.

Another Day at Moloa Bay

Packed our things and turned the head lights of the car to the north in the morning. And drove to the Moloa Bay again, after just a few stops at the post office and at Wal Mart.

We spent the whole day at the Moloa Bay. Doing not much more than we usually do, reading and relaxing and taking a swim once in a while when it got too hot.

Around 5 pm we packed up and turned our head lights south. And drove back home, after a short stop at Big Save to buy groceries for the dinner. Pizza. Yummy.

Oh, and before we got home we just made a very quick stop to watch the sunset 😎

Hawaiian Monk Seal

We were lazy today and just went to the (almost) closest beach, Poipu. In a way that was lucky because we had a chance to see a Hawaiian Monk Seal. Of course we’ve seen one before but they are so cute 🙂

We stayed at Poipu beach the whole day, though it was really hot today. So quite a lot of the time we spent in the water.

When we were not in the water we sat in our chairs reading. Drinking water and SoBe. Eating edamame (soy beans) and having fun.

In the evening we were exhausted. We did quite a lot of swimming today. And it was hot hot hot 😎

Adventure in Jurasic Park & Salt Ponds Beach

We had a talk with Jay-Nyh at Poipu Plantation about what beach we should go to today, and he suggested the Lawai beach. The only problem was that the beach is totally isolated by private property. In this case the National Botanic Garden, where recorded part of Jurasic Park.

Jay explained how to get there via a small path used by locals to go fishing. Then it was jumping across some stones and “you’ll be there in 10-12 minutes”. So of course we wanted to try.

We climbed down to the shore from the dirt road where we parked our car. Then climbed rocks, and rocks and then some more before we ended up in a forest with 15-20 cm pine needles on the gowned making up a brownish soft “floor”. Then we found a dirt road and got to a place with a sign “Danger – Keep Out”, and it seemed the only way to the beach.

So we gave up. Trespassing is no fun in US 🙁 We assumed that the dirt road we were on was the same as where we parked our car. So we walked, and… Just around the bend and we were back at our car. Well, at least we got 20 minutes of exercise climbing the rocks, though the dirt road took only 2 minutes, tops.

We decided to go to the Salt Ponds Beach instead. But first we stopped at one of the Kouchi signs that we have seen all over Kauai. Probably a welcome back Chie Kouchi sign we thought the first time we saw it. But we were out of luck today… “Ron Kouchi for senate” was more like, but quite fun anyway 🙂

As we were discussing if we should steal a sign to bring back to Japan we arrived at the Salt Ponds Beach. A quite nice beach with calm water on the west shoos of Kauai, just past Port Allen. We enjoyed most of the day here on the part of the beach where the locals seemed to hang.

In the late afternoon we felt the urge for some bigger waves than was provided at the Salt Pond Beach. So we went back to the Poipu area and Kiahuna beach. The surf was great and we spent a lot of the time in the water floating back and forth with the waves.

Around 6 pm we packed our things and went to Big Save for some grocery shopping before returning home. Tonight was crab and tomato cream sauce pasta with salad. Yummy.
