Waimea Canyon and Salt Pond

We were early birds today, taking off before 10 am for the Waimea Canyon. The first stop was to overlook the private owned island Nihau.


At around 1000 feet above sea level we made our second stop to watch some red dirt and a waterfall. At 1500 feet above sea level we stopped to have a look at the Waimea Canyon. It looked the same as when Chie and I were here a few years back. Guess mountains don’t change that quick – luckily since the view is beautiful 🙂




We continued upwards to arrive on top of Na Pali coast, where many Hollywood movies have been recorded. It is also one of the rainiest spots on earth. Though today the sun was shining 🙂



Once we had enjoyed the view we drove down the mountain and stopped at the Salt Pond for a late lunch and for cooling off in the ocean. Wonderful it was 😉



Later we were tired from all the impressions and playing in the water so we returned home to a wonderful sunset. And a great dinner, as usual.

Spouting Horn, Maha’ulepu and Kiahuna

Before heading out to any beach we went to the Spouting Horn. It’s not much more than a hole in the lava rock through to the water below. When the waves are high it pushes water up through the hole in a giant geyser like water canon. Well, Chie and Robert seemed transfixed anyway 🙂



Once we had satisfied out curiosity on the Spouting Horn we headed out to Maha’ulepu. It’s a 15 minutes ride on a dirt road but the area is beautiful.



We spent most of the day here bathing, relaxing and reading. Robert and I took a long walk along the shore too. It was hot but quite beautiful.



In the later afternoon the wind got quite strong so we packed our things and drove to Kiahuna where we spent almost as much time playing in the waves as we did on the beach. It was pure fun!



At 5:30 we packed aÂ¥our things again and headed home. Today we were in time for the sunset but the sun was covered by clouds. Well, there is always another day… The view is from our room’s window so any day 🙂

A Visit to Moloa Bay

One of Chie’s and my favorite beaches is Moloa Bay so today we took Robert there. Not only did Robert seem to like it too, but a one year old female Hawaiian Monk Seal seemed to like it too. She had arrived before we got there and was still there when we left.



We spent most of the day here, relaxing, swimming, reading and exploring the beach. At around 5 pm we packed our thing, said good bye to the seal and drove back to Poipu, after a brief stop at Safeway for grocery shopping.



Today was the second day at Kauai that we missed the sunset. We spent too much time on the beach (if that is something you can actually do) and too much time in the grocery store (yeah, that I can believe) so we were back home passed 6:30 pm. Though sunset aftermath was still quite beautiful.

Kauai here We Come…

We left the hotel at 8 am to catch a 10:07 am flight to Kauai. The flight is only 25 or so minutes so it never really gets boring.

In Kauai we got our bags, picked up our rental car and drove straight to our Poipu Plantation Resort. Here we were great by Chris, Javeed and Melissa – always so friendly and helpful. We could check into our room and we spent some time to unpack, at least enough to find our swimwear./p>

Having found our swimwear there was nothing stopping us from going to Kiahuna beach where we enjoyed the big waves and the sunshine. We spent most of the afternoon and early evening at the beach, playing in the waves and enjoying being back in Kauai… And Robert seemed to be enjoying being here for the first time too.

At 5:45 or so we all went grocery shopping. Dinner was late and almost directly after dinner Robert had to go to bed, jet lag. Chie and I went to bed shortly after that 🙂

Going to Hawaii

We departed Narita at 20 minutes past 9 pm, sitting comfortable on the second floor of a 747. Once we were allowed we declined our seats horizontally and slept. Well, except for the dinner and breakfast.

When we arrived at the Honolulu airport it was still morning the same day, al,ost time to go to the office… Except we were half a world away, and on vacation 🙂

Once the shuttle bus dropped us off at the hotel we thought we could check in quickly and meet Robert in his room, but that was not going to happen. The Waikiki Sand Villa had messed up our booking. The first message I got when asking about Robert and his room was that he never checked in :-O

It turned out that because I booked online for all 3 of us and then sent an email to the hotel to ask them to give us connecting room they had booked 4 rooms instead of 2. Finally, after having refused to pay for all four rooms (only after that had they cleared things up) we checked into our room.

Knocking on the door to Robert’s room was without result. Turned out they put him in another room and us in his room.

Once we met we got ready for shopping. Though neither Chie nor I found much to shop this time… What a disappointment 😉

Back at the hotel we had 5 minutes rest before Chie went on a shopping tour in Waikiki while Robert and I walk around. Finally ending up on the beach just in time for some rain and rainbow before the sun set.

After the sun set we slowly walked to Duke’s restaurant where we had a table for 3 reserved at 7:15 pm. The dinner was quite OK for being American, and the desert was humongous.

Back at the hotel Chie and I dropped dead in our beds, and I guess Robert did the same in his.
